BMI Calculator — Body Mass Index
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It's a quick screening tool used by doctors to identify potential weight-related health risks.
BMI Formula
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)
Example: Weight = 70 kg, Height = 1.70 m → BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70²) = 24.2
Limitations of BMI
- BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass.
- Athletes may have high BMI due to muscle, not fat.
- BMI ranges may vary for different ethnicities — Asians have higher health risks at lower BMI values.
- Always consult a doctor for a complete health assessment.
Healthy BMI for Indians
WHO recommends 18.5–24.9 as normal BMI. However, for South Asians (including Indians), a BMI of 23+ may indicate increased health risk due to differences in body composition.
